The Island Gang-Legend of the Masks

Narrow Passage in the Gulf Islands

There was a B.C. ferry making its way between the islands. “Must have come from the Tsawwassen Terminal,” he stated, as the ferry entered the narrow passage in front of them. The scene took him back to the vision he experienced back at Fossil Bay.

Winter Cove Shoreline

A small island portside had Wendy’s interest, but Gary insisted on maintaining their course. They motored around the rocky shores of the second point looking for a place to go ashore when a narrow channel of water between the neighboring island and another point still a distance off came into view. “Ah ha—finally! That’s where we go ashore,” he said pointing to yet another point of land.

“How far are we going?” asked Wendy, a little exasperated at the growing distance between them and Lyall Harbor.

Sandy Beach near Winter Cover

The rocky point stretched out into the water. Gary located a sandy area a little ways into the cove where they could take the boat in. They hit shore in time to see a mother goose and five goslings scamper up the beach. Gary tied Lost Change to a signpost. Shadow was off the boat in no time and ran up the beach putting his nose to work and marking his territory.

Wendy read the sign, “Winter Cove Park. I wonder where it gets its name.”

Opening in the Hedge

They followed a walkway just a short distance when they came to a tall hedge. The walkway continued right into the hedge indicating that at one time there had been an opening—but at the moment it was almost completely filled with overgrowth. Gary forced his way into the hedge, holding back the branches as he went. Eventually he made it through to the other side.

The "Blue Diamond" Ghost

“Is that the Blue Diamond?”

Gary finally got his tongue to work, “You mean—the ghost of the Blue Diamond!”

“Yeah, that’s exactly what I mean.”

“We’ve got to get a look at this!” said Gary, grabbing Wendy and pulling her along to the back of the mansion. Shadow paused and let out a whine. He appeared anxious to get out of there, but reluctantly followed.

In disbelief at what they were witnessing, Wendy jested, “Suppose the girls are on the beach too?”

“Will you look at the sheets she carries!” exclaimed Gary.

“She’s beautiful—huh? Can you even imagine sailing aboard that?” Images of pirates, cannons, and treasure were flying through Gary’s mind as he pictured himself aboard the vessel.
