Literary Objectives

While The Island Gang, Legend of Crystal Cove, was written largely to entertain, it has several foundational purposes. In a world where the “character climate” is continuously shifting under pressure to compromise, either to be accepted, or to accomplish some larger, seemingly greater purpose, we could all use some reminders of the necessity to look to history and remember the consequences of decaying values and morals. The historical setting of The Legend of Crystal Cove reveals the age-old pattern of means justifying ends.

On the other hand, the group of teenagers that comprise The Island Gang, illustrates the difference that can be made when those with strong moral convictions stand up for right and oppose wrong. It is the author's belief that both stances are essential for quelling evil influences in any society. Evil is a harsh word, but is nothing less than selfish influences exerted upon others to upset the delicate balance that promotes peace and prosperity for all. Peace and prosperity for many, if not most, can be maintained when greed and self-indulgence are held at bay.

Through a story involving adventure, mystery, humor, danger, and a little mischief, The Island Gang defines proper relationships and portrays the good, core character values  of a group of young people who can and do make a significant contribution in the fight against the evil they encounter in their world.

The characters in The Island Gang will continue to star in  a series of subsequent books that will introduce additional fictional Native American Legends and take readers through the beauties and mysteries of the Great Pacific Northwest. Through a series of adventures, some characters will waffle from good to bad and back again; others will remain firm in the defense of right; and some of those involved in dark works will see the light and change their ways.

It was imperative that a suit of armor be worn into battle during the Dark and Middle Ages for it to perform as intended. Merely owning a suit of armor did not provide the benefit of protection. Similarly, young people who are “well anchored” in life will not wander far from safety and in time will realize the benefit that a “well set” anchor has provided.

It is commonplace in today’s world to portray inappropriate relationships as appropriate simply because it sizzles and sells. Young people need media sources where proper and safe relationships are positively portrayed so that they, at the very least, can clearly distinguish the benefits and consequences between traditional and alternate lifestyles thus allowing them the benefit of making a choice born of knowledge.
